4 million to recover Radio Liberty

An urgent investment

Investment is urgent due to the state of neglect of natural habitats and historic buildings, and the entities are calling for this budget line, initially included in the 2023 budget negotiations, not to be removed.

A TRAGIC DECISION

On July 25, 2022, the Consell Comarcal del Baix Empordà unanimously approved that Radio Liberty become a Cultural Asset of Local Interest (BCIL), a declaration establishing the protection of the historical, heritage and natural values of Radio Liberty, which is added to the declaration of Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN) for the Mora Tower and the fishing village on Pals Beach, and on 16 November 2022, the Parliament's Climate Action Commission approved a Solveto move which urges the Government to create an interpretation center and Cold War Memorial at Ràdio Liberty, with the aim of recovering the exceptional historical and natural heritage.

According to Marisol Perea, councillor for the Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC) on Pals Town Council.“We have been fighting from the opposition for many years for Pals to stop turning its back on Radio Liberty and the Natural Park.”. Likewise, Narcís Subirana, an opposition councillor with Compromís per Pals, warns of the “Historical and natural significance of this exceptional site throughout Europe which Pals has failed to take advantage of”.

For this reason, the PSC has included an economic item of 4 million euros in its list of demands, thus following its commitment to the request of the territory and the Regional Council and the Climate Action Commission to be able to promote a cold war memorial, and an interpretation center of the old fishing village of Pals and Torre Mora and of the natural area.

Budget items proposed by the PSC in February 2023.

The Generalitat Government's "no" to this investment to recover the historical and natural values within Radio Liberty It has provoked astonishment and indignation among the organisations defending the historic and natural values of this site, because they feel that the agreements and commitments made by the Generalitat at the former transmitter are not being honoured. They also call on the two parties that have supported these budgets – the PSC and En Comú Podem – to continue defending, until the very end, this allocation for the Natural Park of Montgrí, the Medes Islands and the Lower Ter, as well as for culture, archaeology, tourism and the environment.

The indignation of the organisations is plain to see, as last November, the proposal was approved in the Parliament of Catalonia. resolution 250-00678/13 from the Climate Action Committee, in that all the administrations would collaborate to promote a Cold War memorial by preventing deterioration and drawing up a maintenance plan, also that the State, Generalitat and the City Council of Pals, in collaboration with the territory, would promote this project for prevent its deterioration, after the old station was declared BCIL.

The organisations recall that, from the Esquerra Republicana (ERC) parliamentary group, the MP Anna Torrentà, during her intervention in the Climate Action Committee, specifically called for investment and for the necessary measures to be taken to monitor and develop the cultural project for this space.

The associations Save the Platja de Pals, the Cercle Català d’Història, Gent del Ter, the Comissió de la Dignitat, Amics de la Unesco de Girona, SOS Costa Brava and the Virtual Museum of Radio Liberty join together to denounce the state of neglect in which the natural habitats and historic buildings within the Park find themselves and demand the defence and enhancement of this natural, archaeological, and historical memory space, and they are pushing for the administrations to coordinate, comply with agreements, and draw up a preliminary project and a management plan as soon as possible, given that Radio Liberty is an area of great ecological value, as accredited by the charter CETS.

Salvem la Platja de Pals, to take advantage of this opportunity to budget for the future Cold War interpretation and memorial centre and “also with the help of European funds, which align perfectly with the aims and guidelines for which they were created. Pals now has the opportunity to cease being the second most seasonal municipality in Catalonia, focused on sun and beach, to take advantage of this space as a centre for research and study, and at the same time, oriented towards visitors who respect nature and culture.».

Joaquim Ullan of the Cercle Català d’Història demands that there be a budget allocation for Radio Liberty before the budgets are approved as a first step, since it could not be understood that the budget has been increased by 101 million euros for Culture, and that not a single euro be allocated to Radio Liberty, now that the outcry to develop the cultural and natural project has reached Parliament and the European Commission”.
